Using Virtual Mode

Overview

Use virtual mode to increase fpSpread control responsiveness when working with large amounts of data. You can use virtual mode for a sheet with a large number of rows or for a sheet bound to a large database.

If you do not use virtual mode, the sheet can take a long time to display data. The diminished responsiveness occurs because the sheet must read through all the rows before displaying the data. In virtual mode, the sheet reads ahead only when needed to display additional rows and retrieves records from a buffer area for faster response.

You can specify characteristics of virtual mode, such as how many rows are read into the buffer area at a time. In addition, you can display a special vertical scroll bar to use with virtual mode. Set the sheet before setting virtual mode if there are multiple sheets.

Notes:
  • If you are using a bound sheet that is using virtual mode, the Data control bound to the sheet might not behave as you expect. For more information, see Using Virtual Mode with Bound Sheets.
  • If the sheet does not know the total number of rows, the row headers might not display the correct numbers for the rows in virtual mode. For best results, hide the row headers. For instructions, see Hiding the Column and Row Headers.
  • For best results, do not use multiple- or extended-selection operation mode in a sheet that is using virtual mode.
  • Do not freeze rows in a sheet that is using virtual mode.
  • You cannot sort a sheet that is using virtual mode.
  • For ActiveX users, you should not use the Smart Print option to print a sheet that is using virtual mode.
